Presented By: Patrick Armstrong, LMFT

Using the context of both 1) World Professional Association for Transgender Health, Standards of Care and 2) Association for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Issues in Counseling, Standards of Care, the presentation will explore issues unique to diagnosing and treating LGBTQ+ individuals, such as: correct LGBTQ+ terminology, unique risks and challenges for LGBT individuals, basic competencies in the treatment of LGBTQ+ clients and how to be an ally the LGBTQ+ community, challenges faced in diagnosing LGBTQ+ persons using the DSM, and the nuances of Gender, Identity, and Attraction, as well as how they interact.

Didactic teaching will be used with ample opportunities provided for participants to ask questions.

Learning Objectives - After completion of the presentation the attendees will:

1. Identify several issues unique to LGBTQ+ persons, as they relate to mental health needs and services.

2. Understand the difference between Sex & Gender.

3. Be familiar with common terms related to the LGBTQ+ Community, and their pitfalls.

4. Be familiar with some of the unique multicultural challenges of the LGBTQ+ population, including bullying.

About our speaker

Patrick Armstrong, LMFT, is graduate of Sonoma State Counseling Department. He primarily works with teens, youth and young adults, specializing in LGBTQ+. He has worked for Social Advocates for Youth, Community and Family Service Agency, and Face 2 Face. He has a private practice in Santa Rosa, CA.

CEU Certificate: You must stay for the entire meeting to receive your certificate. If you have signed IN and OUT of the course, you will receive an email with a link to the course evaluation. Fill in your name and license number on the certificate, and right click on it to save it to your own computer. Course meets the qualifications for 1.5 hrs of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.

CEUs are free for RECAMFT members, or members of other CAMFT Chapters. Non-members who desire CEUs pay $15.
