Woman looks into shattered mirror.Restoring Reality: Therapeutic Approaches for Narcissism Recovery

Presented by

Ashley Green, LMFT
Friday, June 5th, 2026
9:00 am - 10:45 pm PT

Zoom, 1.5 CEs

This training offers a comprehensive, trauma-informed framework for working with individuals recovering from narcissistic abuse, with a focus on moving clients beyond survival-based coping into sustainable healing and post-traumatic growth. Participants will explore the nuanced presentation of narcissistic abuse, including gaslighting, coercive control, trauma bonding, and identity erosion, as well as the complex clinical presentations that often accompany these experiences (e.g., anxiety, depression, complex trauma responses, and difficulties with trust, boundaries, and self-concept).

Ashley Green, LMFT

President's Message

Building More Community

By Pat Hromalik, LMFT

RECAMFT President

Dear RECAMFT Community:

Stained glass circleAt a time when we see so much polarization and disconnection, I am reminded that in our work as therapists we often work with this through cultivating openness, tolerance, acceptance, curiosity and community.  At a recent gathering called “Drinks with Shrinks” one of the founders / “co-creators”, John Crowley, spoke about several programs that he works on to foster these characteristics.  “Petaluma Conversations – Bridging Social and Political Divides” ( https://aqus.com/talk/)  conducts  facilitated discussions on topics that tend toward polarization and tries to foster understanding and tolerance by bringing people with differing views together to talk, listen and connect.  “Join Something” is another idea created by John’s Aqus Community Foundation (https://aqus.com/) which promotes a number of different organizations and non-profits in the Petaluma area that need members and/or volunteers.  John and others who work with him in a number of different groups believe that bringing people together and having people work on something with a common interest is a way to create better connections and build stronger communities.  I believe that in our face-to-face human interactions we have that opportunity to connect and build a sense of belonging and community.  RECAMFT has been a sponsor of “Drinks with Shrinks” which meets twice a year at Life on Art in Petaluma – the next event will be in October – please check it out. https://aqus.com/drinkswithshrinks/

We have so many varied ways for you to engage with your RECAMFT Community this month!  Our Racial and Social Justice Committee is working hard to support our LGBTQ+ community through participation in the Sonoma County Pride Parade on June 6th  and the Dyke March / Lez-a-Palooza street fair on June 21st, along with sponsoring booths at both – you can march, you can make signs, you can table at our booths.  There is a co-working session to help you catch up on paperwork or projects on June 3rd, and our monthly CE speaker meeting on June 5th and board meeting on June 12th. Our Makers Guild / Craft Group meets on June 12th. We are having our first Movie Night, viewing “HER” followed by a discussion on AI relationships on June 18th We have our quarterly Ethics Roundtable to discuss challenging situations on June 26th.  See below regarding a Listening Session on June 29th to get input and feedback about serving you better.

Building more engagement with our RECAMFT community has been a priority to which I and other board members are committed.  We even codified it in our Strategic Plan (https://www.recamft.org/Strategic-Plan).  We have heard that people want more opportunities to connect and have been working on new and varied offerings. Our membership committee has brainstormed and came up with lots of wonderful, fun, different ideas.  However, we need more help to make these offerings happen.  More and more we are seeing primarily board members attending committee meetings and implementing events.  We need HELP!  Here are some areas that I’d like to ask you to consider offering some time to help.

  • Interest in starting or being part of a special interest group – be part of forming general guidelines for groups and how to promote them. One to two hours per month for start up – ongoing varies by group and frequency of meeting.

NEWSLETTER Committee Needs

Newsletter Assistant

  • One to two hours a month.
  • Work with Chair to put together the monthly online newsletter.

We also know that we do not have all the ideas or answers about how to engage more of you and draw you into participation.  So, I want to hear from you.  On June 29th from 7 to 8:30 I will be on Zoom for a Listening Session to hear from you about how to support you better, what you need and want from RECAMFT and understand barriers to participation. So please drop in and share your thoughts.

RECAMFT goes on a summer break in July and August, so I wish you an enjoyable summer with some good time for relaxing and recharging.  See you again in September!

Kindest regards,

Pat Hromalik, LMFT

There is an increasing need and demand for therapists to understand the Neurodiversity Paradigm and to implement neurodiversity-affirming care in practice. Increasing numbers of clients are being diagnosed and/or self-identify with Autism and/or ADHD, but most therapists have had little (or no) training in accurately identifying and supporting these clients. This training provides an overview of the Neurodiversity Paradigm and neurodiversity-affirming care, with a focus on Autism and ADHD.

Katy Higgins Lee, LMFT is a multiply neurodivergent therapist and clinical supervisor in private practice in Northern California. She has been in private practice for nine years and has been a supervisor at the Lomi Psychotherapy Clinic for five years. She is a CAMFT-approved Continuing Education Provider and offers trainings on neurodiversity, with a focus on Autism, ADHD, and Giftedness. She is also a neurodiversity advocate, providing psycho-education through social media. She has a Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology, with an emphasis in Somatics, from the California Institute of Integral Studies. Her website is https://www.katyhigginslee.com.

    The Summer Solstice

by Jenny Patterson-Kerr, LMFT, RECAMFT Director at Large

In the Northern Hemisphere, the Summer Solstice marks the longest day of the year, the first day of summer. It is a time when many spend more time outdoors soaking up the sun and being in nature. An increased sense of well-being and vitality boosts the system. Natural sunlight directly affects the brain, enhancing serotonin, regulating circadian rhythms and reducing symptoms of anxiety and Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD. From a Jungian perspective, the archetype of the sun represents the conscious self, a vital life force radiating truth, energy and vitality. This can be a time to illuminate purpose and meaning and to examine if we are following our path. What do we need to let go of and what can we embrace?

As therapists we can bring these ideas and images into our sessions, encouraging our clients to explore their own light. How is it shining? Are they allowing their true essence to fully express itself? If not, can they identify the beliefs, and/or behaviors that are getting in the way? We can be guides to help them first identify obstacles and then implement strategies to let go and slowly, one step at a time, actualize their purpose, their path.

There is a myriad of ways we can begin to bring clients back in touch with their true essence. Breath-work is a beautiful way to stop the mindless chatter, calming the nervous system and fostering self-awareness. As we center the mind we become anchored to the present moment. When we are in touch with the present moment, we can bypass anxiety about the future, regrets about the past and come to the here and now. This can elicit self-compassion, authentic connection and helps them transform their ordinary experience into extraordinary.

Through ritual a deeper layer of transformation can occur. One can light a candle to symbolize the sun and then write down fears or old beliefs that are getting in the way. Burning these old beliefs, safely, and then as smoke releases write down intention(s) for the upcoming year. Affirm with each flame by saying, “I release what no longer serves me, I welcome new beginnings with open arms.” Hold it in your heart and visualize it unfolding. This can be a potent way for bringing about change in a conscious way.

Finally, as a culminating project one can create a sun mandala. Starting with a circle at the center, write a goal or intention inside. Then draw lines extending from the circle like rays radiating from the sun. Along the rays, one can write empowering words or steps to achieve this intention/goal. Like a mantra, one can speak these words, or steps, visualizing and feeling them deeply, enhancing the energy flow and manifesting one’s desires.

As therapists we can utilize the natural rhythm and flow of the seasons to enhance our clients’ sessions in a meaningful way. Summer is certainly one of those times. First, we can shine the light on what is working and what is not by examining underlying beliefs and behaviors. Next, by harnessing breathwork, ritual, visualizations, and art, clients can let go and open up, bit by bit, allowing their true essence to emerge in delightful and transformative ways, as one ray at a time brightens becoming one unique powerful sun.
