Course Description

This foundational course is designed for therapists at any stage of their career who wish to deepen their understanding of trauma-informed expressive arts approaches and explore how creative interventions may support meaningful therapeutic work with individuals, couples, families, and groups. Through experiential activities, participants will learn about expressive arts modalities and consider client needs, readiness, safety, and trauma-informed principles, while also attending to scope of practice and professional competence. No prior expressive arts experience is necessary, and minimal materials are required—a writing utensil and paper are sufficient, though participants are welcome to bring additional art materials. This course does not constitute training or credentialing in art therapy or qualify participants to practice outside their existing scope
of competence.

Educational Goals

This training provides an introduction to trauma-informed expressive arts approaches and their potential role in supporting emotional processing, regulation, and wellbeing in clinical work. Participants will explore approaches across core expressive arts modalities —including visual art, written and spoken word, music, movement, and drama—while considering client needs, readiness, safety, and professional scope of practice.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to:

1. Identify at least five expressive arts modalities and describe one therapeutic application for each.
2. Identify at least three factors to consider when evaluating whether an expressive arts activity may be appropriate for a client’s identified emotional needs, including scope of practice, training, and competence.
3. Identify at least three trauma-informed principles that should inform the use of expressive arts activities in clinical settings.
4. Describe at least two ways cultural traditions and community arts practices can build connection and support healing.
5. Identify at least 2 insights gained through experiential expressive arts activities and identify how these experiences can inform clinicians’ understanding of arts-based approaches while remaining within their professional scope of practice.
   
   
   

About Our Speaker

Danielle Saporta, LMFT

Danielle Saporta, LMFT is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with a passion for using the arts, play, humor, and connection as vehicles for transformation and healing. Practicing in Sonoma, CA, she specializes in trauma-informed Expressive Arts Therapy and treat kids, teens, and adults experiencing anxiety, depression, relationship and stage of life changes, new motherhood, job stress, trauma, grief and loss. Danielle uses the arts to support her clients and supervisees in deepening their self-awareness, improving communication, enhancing coping with challenge and increasing social, emotional, spiritual, and community wellbeing.

Danielle received her masters in Expressive Arts Therapy from California Institute of Integral Studies in 2015 and when not seeing clients or providing clinical supervision at community mental health non-profit, trains other therapists, educators, and behavioral health workers to implement the arts into their practices.

Please note, this is a 3-CE training, comprised of three hours of training plus time for RECAMFT announcements and a break. You must be logged on at the beginning of the training, be present during the event (including responding to attendance checks by coming on camera, verbally replying, and/or replying in the chat), and stay logged on for the full duration, to end at 12:30pm, in order to earn the CEs. If your camera is off the entire time, and RECAMFT cannot verify you were physically present at your computer throughout the training, then RECAMFT cannot issue a CE certificate, as we would not be able to show that the BBS requirements for your participation were met.

So, you want to start a private practice? Thinking about launching a practice - or ready to reinvigorate the one you already have? RECAMFT is here to offer support and understanding of the nuts and bolts of starting, building, and sustaining a private practice in today’s environment. (Note: CEs are not available for this event based on the topic under BBS regulations.)

The RECAMFT Prelicensed Committee hosts and sponsors this 3-hour workshop focused on the practical side of private practice, including:

• Operations: Understanding systems, workflow, and the day-to-day flow of private practice
• Taking insurance: Navigating the ins and outs of insurance
• Sustainable marketing: Planning and building effective marketing strategies and habits
• And more: Practical considerations for building and sustaining a successful practice

The workshop will feature RECAMFT Prelicensed Committee members sharing helpful insights, experiences, and lessons learned from building and sustaining their own practices, along with three experts from our community! 

Expert Commentators

Lori L. Crowley, LMFT, LPCC (she/her) is a licensed psychotherapist, somatic practitioner, and neurodivergent coach based in Petaluma, California. As the founder of ExP Therapy, Lori holds dual licensure as both a Marriage and Family Therapist and a Professional Clinical Counselor, with a clinical focus on providing neurodivergent-affirming, trauma-informed care.

Lori holds a B.A. in Biophysics from UC Berkeley and a Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology with a specialization in Holistic and Somatic Psychology from John F. Kennedy University. Melding her strong background in neurobiology with her own lived experience as a neurodivergent adult and parent, Lori specializes in supporting individuals, couples, and families navigating Autism, ADHD, Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA), sensory processing differences, and complex grief, with a focus on nervous system safety, somatic integration, and authentic self-advocacy.

Tatra-Li de la Rosa is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and a graduate of Sonoma State University’s Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling program. She has been a member of the adjunct faculty since 2019, where she has taught a variety of courses, including Couples & Sexuality, Multicultural Counseling, Applied Counseling Techniques and Assessment, and Clinical Mental Health and Field Experience.

Tatra-Li maintains a private practice in Santa Rosa and offers associate supervision within her group practice, which specializes in trauma recovery, couples work, and the utilization of IFS as a modality for healing. She also offers licensed therapists training in specific strategies for working with challenging shame states through Compassionate Trainings, an online learning platform for therapists, healers, and coaches.

Kira S. Kayler is a therapist, clinical supervisor, and private practice owner with a background spanning corporate finance, nonprofit work, and mental health. After 14 years in the corporate world, Kira returned to school to pursue her Master’s degree in Psychology and transitioned into the mental health field, working in residential, community, school, and juvenile justice settings. Her clinical experience includes working with families, trauma, child and teen development, and individual growth and change.

After 14 years in the nonprofit sector, Kira opened her own private practice, where she focuses more deeply on her areas of interest. She brings her analytical and research background to her clinical work and is passionate about continued learning and clinical supervision. Kira is also the author of The Prehistoric Brain in the Modern World: How to Get Unstuck When Your Brain is Holding You Hostage, which explores how the nervous system shapes our decisions, reactions, and habits, and offers practical tools for understanding and changing deeply ingrained patterns.

Therapy in the Custody Storm: What Every Clinician Needs to
Know

Course Description

Custody cases bring some of the highest-stakes, most ethically complicated work a therapist will ever do. One misstep in role clarity, consent, or documentation can affect not just your client's healing, but the outcome of their case. Sooner or later, this case lands on your caseload, whether you sought it out or not. This training meets you wherever you are, from seasoned clinicians to those just beginning, and whether this is your first custody case or your fiftieth. This 3-hour orientation gives you the nuts and bolts to handle it with confidence: the difference between clinical and forensic roles, why dual parent consent matters so much in child therapy cases, how to collaborate across disciplines without crossing ethical lines, and why the old IPV vs. alienation debate is giving way to a more accurate, multifactorial understanding of parent-child contact problems. You'll walk away knowing exactly where your lane is, how to stay in it, and who to call when a case gets complicated — protecting your clients, your license, and your peace of mind.

Educational Goals

By the end of this training, participants will be able to identify the key roles, ethical boundaries, and clinical considerations involved in court-involved therapy across child, individual adult, and family modalities, and know where to turn for further consultation and support when navigating these cases.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to:

1. Identify at least 3 ethical distinctions between clinical and forensic roles in court-involved therapy practice.
2. Describe at least 2 reasons dual parent consent and involvement are important when initiating child therapy in a court-involved case.
3. Identify at least 3 ethical limits governing multidisciplinary collaboration among clinicians, forensic evaluators, and legal professionals in court-involved cases.
4. Explain at least 3 factors comprising a multifactorial framework for assessing parent-child contact problems, as an alternative to the traditional two-factor (IPV vs. alienation) model.
5. Apply cultural humility principles to at least 2 case considerations when working with court-involved families from diverse racial, cultural, or family-structure backgrounds, including those with histories of abuse, neglect, or trauma.
   
   
   

About Our Speakers

Dené Carroll, LCSW

Dené Carroll, LCSW, brings sharp clinical skills, research-informed practice, and a deeply caring presence to her work with families navigating the mental health and legal systems. A former Sonoma County CPS social worker and court investigator, she specializes in co-parenting counseling, family systems therapy, and court-involved cases in her Santa Rosa private practice. Alongside colleague Elizabeth Crenshaw, she developed training and consultation for therapists working with complex court-involved families, grounding the work in current research while keeping ethics and the law at the forefront. As a parent of two neurodivergent children, she pairs expertise with lived understanding and heart.

Elizabeth Crenshaw, LMFT

Elizabeth Crenshaw, MA, LMFT, has been a licensed clinician for over 30 years, specializing in court-involved therapy, co-parenting counseling, reunification therapy, and high-conflict divorce. Based in Santa Rosa, she brings a rare combination of clinical depth, intuition, and calm to some of family law's most complex cases. Elizabeth has held leadership roles across domestic violence, residential, and youth services programs and has provided yearly court-involved therapy training through the Sonoma County Bar Association and AFCC. She has served as Chair of the Mental Health Liaison Committee and is known among colleagues and clients alike as a steady, grounding presence in the storm.

RECAMFT CARE Circle: Compassion, Acknowledgement, Recharge, Empower

The RECAMFT CARE (Compassion, Acknowledgement, Recharge and Empower) Circle was created as a safe space for us as a community of therapists who are also human.  

It is a place to come to share challenges and successes, seek support, offer compassion, share wisdom and express gratitude and be uplifted.  We hold much for our clients and in our own lives; this is a brief time to set down our load for a moment and bring in light and lightness.
    
The group is informal, small and relaxed.  We share work and/or personal struggles and triumphs, express gratitude, witness each other and give support; and advice if asked for.  We also share uplifting readings, quotes or any other medium that inspires or comforts. And we often laugh!

Got a case that's bothering you? Have you found yourself pondering an ethical dilemma? Join us for the Ethics Roundtable and explore solutions to sticky cases with other colleagues, which is a totally enriching and mutually supportive experience together.  

If you are a RECAMFT member, come and discuss your ethical situations with colleagues in a confidential setting, and set your mind at ease. You don't have to have a case to discuss, but can just come to gain some knowledge from seasoned colleagues. The Ethics Roundtable will help you feel better and more confident in your clinical work. No CEs, but the 90 minutes will be well spent.
