Robot hand to human hand with arm tattoosAI in Mental Health: the Good, the Bad,

and the Dangerous

Presented by

Dr. Rachel Wood, PhD, LPC
Friday, April 3rd, 2026
9:30 am - 12:55 pm PT

Zoom, 3 CEs

Artificial Intelligence is shifting the relational bedrock of society; are we ready for it as mental health professionals? AI is already in your practice, whether invited or not. Hundreds of millions of people are using AI chatbots for emotional support, which means that most clinicians have clients who are turning to chatbots in between sessions. How do we conceptualize this in the therapeutic context? How do we assess for this? What are the potential implications of AI-attachment? AI is being seamlessly interwoven into clinical tools such as EHRs for documentation, scheduling, and note summarization. Utilizing these tools requires thoughtful engagement in order to uphold the highest ethical standards of privacy, informed consent, confidentiality, and most of all the therapeutic alliance itself. Before diving into these tools additional considerations include addressing algorithmic bias and our ethical responsibility to advocate for marginalized communities. All of this and more will be explored in this insightful, nuanced, and balanced presentation of AI in mental health.

Dr. Rachel Wood, PhD, LPC

Sad looking Asian womanWorking with Grief and Loss among Asians and Asian Americans

Presented by

Dr. Christine Chang, PhD

Friday, May 1st, 2026

9:00 am - 11:15 am PT

2 CEs - On Zoom

Course Description

Grief and loss are universal human experiences, yet how they are understood, expressed, and processed is profoundly intertwined with cultural context, migration history, and intergenerational trauma. This skill-focused clinical training is designed for licensed therapists working with Asian and Asian American clients experiencing grief and loss. Appropriate for both beginning-level clinicians and experienced practitioners, this training will provide a culturally grounded framework for understanding how grief may manifest across diverse Asian and Asian American communities, while strengthening clinicians' capacities for assessment, conceptualization, and intervention within culturally specific tools.

Christine Chang, PhDAbout our speaker Dr. Christine Chang, Licensed Psychologist

Christine Chang, Ph.D., has been practicing as a licensed psychologist in California since 2016. She currently serves as an adjunct faculty member in the Counseling Program at Palo Alto University, after previously teaching in the Clinical Psychology PsyD programs at the University of San Francisco and the Wright Institute. Dr. Chang offers culturally informed depth psychotherapy with specialties in anxiety, grief, attachment trauma, and issues related to immigration and minority experiences. In addition to her clinical practice, she provides training and workshops focusing on contemporary psychodynamic theory and practice, cultural decolonization, and Asian/Asian American well-being.

President's Message

Duality

By Pat Hromalik, LMFT

RECAMFT President

Dear RECAMFT Community:

As I write this message, we are experiencing such incredibly beautiful weather – March appears to be going out like a “lamb.” A week ago, I was in Chicago and the wind chill factor was below freezing; it snowed the morning I left and I arrived to sunshine and 88-degree weather in Oakland! What a juxtaposition! Essentially it was both very cold and very hot at the same time. If you are familiar with Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) you know that dialectics is examining and seeing that two opposing ideas can occur together. It is this duality that I feel so intensely now. I feel it in pleasure of the renewal and rebirth of such early spring and in the sadness of climate change and fear that our rain has ended and drought looms. I feel it with some dread approaching a BIG number birthday this month and at the same time, the energy I feel with my work and all the ideas and plans percolating within RECAMFT and some of our new board members and volunteers. I feel it in the pride I have in all the good work we and other caring professionals and volunteers do for the people in our communities, while also feeling such a range of emotions about all that is happening in our communities, country and the world.

Two hands form a heartAfter the last election I attended a circle for therapist offered by Pamela Rosen of Reparentive Therapy to express and hold feelings. She offered a poem written by Drew Lanham that I have since shared with clients and several times at our RECAMFT Care Circles. It is my offering to you at this time when we are feeling and holding so many strong feelings as it both acknowledges them, while holding our ability to continue, to do, to hope, and to find beauty, joy and gratitude.

To walk in a mad world,
but not be mad.

To not imagine how it happened,
but know the all too painful why.

To mourn hope’s demise,
but revive it from deep within.

To weaken at the knees,
but stand strong in my belief.

To feel broken,
but somehow begin the repair.

To have justice denied
but know it must come of my own making

To be empty,
but not full of hate.

To know despair,
but make short the relationship.

To have worth demeaned
but know my worth’s meaning.

To have no words,
but find something worthy to say.

To have confusion be the choice,
but see my own way clear.

To be bitter,
but find sweetness in kindred hugs.

To have the game cheated away
but my life’s practice soundly played.

To wallow in all this misery,
but wash clean in worthy mission after.

To be lost
but keep the bearing home in heart’s map.

To have the heaviness weigh two tons
but find lightness knowing I’m not alone.

To lose trust in so-called-friends and neighbors,
but find faith in those more mindfully close.

To want better in some tomorrow to come,
someday
beyond this day
whenever that time might come,

These are my pleas, my promises to self, my solemn prayer;
To whatever God or gods might be listening this dark morning.

By Drew Lanham

Kindest regards,

When discussing the treatment process for substance use addiction including dual-diagnosis, the focus is often on the individual who is suffering from addiction. However, it is important to understand how the family can play a part in the recovery process. Additionally, the family may experience their own form of recovery because of experiences they’ve had with their loved one suffering from addiction. Understanding how family can support their loved one while also attending to their own needs, by learning how to set boundaries and accessing resources, can impact efficacy of treatment.

Dr. Jason Wilson, PsyD, LPC is a 21 year Navy Veteran who has been focused on helping people in recovery for 10 years. He completed his Bachelor's at UCLA, Master’s at Capella University, became a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and continued on to finish his Doctorate in Psychology. He worked at VA hospitals as an addictions therapist before becoming a Clinical Supervisor for a private treatment facility. He left that position to become the Clinical Director with his current facility overseeing the clinical team of therapists and overall program functioning.

CAMFT’s Day of Advocacy - March 12, 2026, Sacramento, California

    By Jessica Heaney, LMFT

    RECAMFT President Elect

CAMFT Day of Advocacy 2026CAMFTs Day of Advocacy was a huge success and I want to go back next year. There were about 40- 50 members from chapters around the state and the CAMFT Board. I learned what CAMFT’s lobbyists are working on – currently SB 903 Artificial Intelligence and Mental Health Treatment also known as the Wellness and Oversight for Psychological Resources Act.

Senator Stephen Padilla introduced the bill to “safeguard individuals seeking therapy or psychotherapy services by ensuring these services are delivered by qualified, licensed, or certified professionals… intended to protect consumers from unlicensed or unqualified providers, including unregulated artificial intelligence systems, while respecting individual choice and access to community-based and faith-based mental health support”. Illinois passed a similar bill last year upon which SB 903 is modeled. Click here to see SB 903.

My fears that I did not know enough to participate and be effective were quickly alleviated. CAMFT did an excellent job of preparing us the morning of the event. Kasha Hunt of Political Solutions worked with my group of three from the moment I got there through the end of the day. She talked about the work she does on behalf of LMFTs and CAMFT. We talked about the policy interests of the five representatives’ offices with whom we were scheduled to meet.

Hamaseh Kianfar, EdD, LMFT (CAMFT board member and Marin chapter member), Lilian Ghafari, LMFT (Sacramento Chapter member) and I developed a pitch to introduce CAMFT, talk about the work we each do, and share why we feel strongly SB 903 should pass. I have a lot of respect and admiration for our lobbyist, Kasha, who kept us on task, on track and on time while also having a very enjoyable and rewarding day. Please reach out to me if you have questions or are interested in participating next year.

All in all, it was a beautiful, not too hot, sunny day in Sacramento. It was great meeting other chapter members, and seeing the nuances of how CAMFT helps get laws passed in both Sacramento and Washington, DC to protect our profession. I can’t remember the last time I was at the Capitol, but the next time I am there, I will certainly remember CAMFT’s Day of Advocacy.
