No Shortcuts: Gen-Z and the Hero's Journey

Presented by

Teresa Bertoncin, LMFT, LPCC

Friday, May 3rd, 2024

10:00 am - 12:15 pm

Zoom, 2.0 CEs

Course Description

This presentation explores Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey relative to Gen-Z population (those born between 1995-2012). Initiatory life and death imagery are explored through the lens of developmental significance and trauma, as well as the concept of metaphorical suicide as a transformational urge. Also considered is the impact and influence of parenting, community, environment, and social media on the success and failure of the initiatory juncture. This presentation will look at various research that underscores relevant struggles and interruptions, as well as examples of cause and presentation of those struggles. Integrative approaches will be addressed that provide trauma resolution while building and establishing an internal locus of control and resiliency.

Educational Goals
  • Recognizing the Initiatory Wound
  • Understanding the theory of Metaphorical Suicide
  • Understanding the neurological, psychological, and psychological impact of social media.
  • The impact of social media and the environment: Addiction and avoidant behavior
  • Examine integrative approaches that facilitate resilience.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify 3 problematic issues with Gen-Z and Social Media.
  2. Identify 3 parenting and/or environmental shifts that have adversely affected Gen Z
  3. Name 3 positive qualities to look for in Gen-Z clients.

Training Schedule and Attendance Requirements

Please note, this is a 2.0-CE training, comprised of two hours of training plus time for RECAMFT announcements in the meeting. You must be logged on at the beginning of the training, be present during the event (including responding to attendance checks by coming on camera, verbally replying, and/or replying in the chat), and stay logged on for the full duration, to end at 12:15 pm, in order to earn the CEs. If your camera is off the entire time, and RECAMFT cannot verify you were physically present at your computer throughout the training, then RECAMFT cannot issue a CE certificate, as we would not be able to show that the BBS requirements for your participation were met.
